Meet Mathieu Dechamps
Mathieu Dechamps’s passion for woodworking developed at an early age with the Belgium born craftsman originally training as a maker of fine furniture since he was just 13 years old. Spending a number of years travelling the world, he was first introduced to knifemaking in Scotland. Now residing in the Dandenong Ranges in Melbourne, Mathieu hand crafts knives using the sustainably sourced timber from the idyllic ranges which surround him. Witness the profound respect Mathieu and Jo have for one another’s dedication to their craft in this untold story of sustainability.
With patience and excellence woven into each and every knife, discover Mathieu’s passion for continually improving his craft in episode 1 of Stories of sustainability. Similar to Miele’s ethos of ‘Immer Besser’ or ‘Forever Better’ the artisan knifemaker is driven to develop products that will last a lifetime and be handed down to future generations.
"It’s so nice to use equipment that just works."
Having functional equipment is vital for every artisan, no matter what they are creating. Jo Barrett relies on her custom dough knife developed with Mathieu and the reliable performance of Miele’s Moisture Plus oven to ensure she can produce excellence every time.
Miele's Moisture Plus function
Creating a lovely humid atmosphere within the oven cavity is essential for making artisan bread. Miele’s Moisture Plus functionality means that this can be done with precision at just the touch of a button. What’s more, moisture can be added manually like in Jo’s scrumptious pull apart bread recipe or automatically for optimal convenience.

A sustainable production
To us, sustainability is a journey. We understand it as the accelerator to move Miele forward. In all our projects, we continually work towards sustainable innovations that will help make a difference in the world. With our latest content series, we challenged ourselves to make the production a completely sustainable one, working with limited crew and using only battery powered equipment, reducing waste and recycling on set. In an industry first, we are humbled to have been awarded the ‘Green Seal’ certification by the Environmental Media Association (EMA), a body which honours and recognises progress in sustainable production.
